Many years have passed since 1974, when VW Golf's Mark 1 was launched. Over these years the Golf has come to be Volkswagen's best-selling model and the world's third best-selling model, with more than 25 million built by 2007, after the Toyota Corolla and the Ford F-Series. And why wouldn't it be? It's fairly small, trendy, attractive, sporty, classy, spacious and if you're willing to pay the right amount of money, it's even amazingly fast.
What about the new Mark, the Golf 6? From the looks of it, it's just a more pronounced facelift. But is it? Well, it's based on the existing Golf V platform, that's for sure. And although this is a good thing, because Mark 5 was a well-balanced car, it might determine cynics to say that this is not a real new model.
Apparently TDI engines will use the common rail direct injection which will replace the Pump Duse system. There will be a new 1.6 TFSI engine that could reach as much as 200 hp and a 1.0 - 1.2 l petrol engine of 75 hp.
Another interesting feature is that there will be an optional Volkswagen Adaptive Chassis Control which will allow the driver to select between normal, comfort and sports modes which will vary the suspension, steering and accelerator behavior, as a result. Another great thing is that VW claims that this model will be cheaper to build and to buy than the Golf V.
The new Volkswagen Golf 6 is expected to arrive at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. You will, probably, be able to buy one by the end of the year, or the beginning of 2009.
